DukeMed Pride

Category: Special Interest

DukeMed Pride is a student organization dedicated to providing a supportive environment for LGBTQI students and their allies. We further work to promote the visibility of the LGBTQI community within the medical school and enact events that allow our peers to learn about the community and caring for LGBTQI patients. We have also focused on building bridges to other areas of Duke University Medical Center and the Duke community, and we currently partner with several other professional and graduate student groups in developing programming and collaborating on events.

Over the years, we have enacted a variety of programs, from movie nights to an LGBT sex education class for Duke undergraduate students. Every September we host a tailgate for NC Pride, the statewide celebration of all things LGBT that occurs on Duke campus. We have hosted dinners for Duke undergrads interested in the health sciences, and we have an active role in the Admissions Office to provide information and support to LGBTQI applicants. We have also developed curriculum on caring for LGBTQ patients for second and fourth year medical students at Duke. Finally, we have worked together with outside student groups at Duke and other surrounding campuses to organize professional student mixers and other networking opportunities.

Our largest project for this coming year includes creating a Duke OutList accessible to students and formation of a duke.edu DukeMed Pride webpage in order to make sure Pride remains a sustainable organization for years to come.

Please feel free to contact DukeMed Pride (gayatdukemed@gmail.com) with any questions you may have about our organization or LGBTQI life at Duke or in Durham.
