Welcome to Durham!

As students at Duke, we become very involved in the surrounding community in which we live. Duke medical students live all around Durham, and the city is well-regarded for its safe, suburban feel. While Durham may feel like a small city, it has the amenities and resources of a much larger city. Originally an old tobaccco town, Durham is today known as the “City of Medicine” because of its 6 major hospitals, 300+ medical companies and one of the largest research parks in the world.

Most DukeMed students live in one of the many modern apartment complex in the Durham area. While some students live just across the street from campus, many other live an easy 5-10 minute commute away. The cost of living in Durham is very reasonable, with typical apartment rents ranging from $400 to $1000 per month. Some students, including many MD-PhD students, purchase homes or townhomes in the area.

Durham is home to numerous movie theaters, malls, and an amazing assortment of restaurants and bars. The city was recently named Bon App├ętit magazine’s #1 Foodiest Small-Town and was featured in the New York Times Dining Section. DukeMed students are frequency participants (and winners!) at weekly trivia nights sponsored by a number of local bars. The Durham Bulls Athletic Park is home to the Durham Bulls, a AAA team, and the headquarters of USA Baseball. In addition, Durham is home to the Durham Performing Arts Theater, which is the 4th largest-grossing theaters in the United States and routinely features Broadway shows, comedians and musical acts.

The Triangle region, which encompasses Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh, provides a wealthy of dining, social, and cultural opportunities beyond those in the Durham area. And outside of the city, the beaches of Wilmington and the mountains of the Appalachians are only three hours away, making them popular destinations for weekend trips.

Durham is a wonderful city that we love to live in. Many DukeMed students love the area so much that they decide to remain in the Triangle area for residency and make the Triangle their home.
